Yasin was recited in Roblox
After Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali died on Monday, aged 100, a Yasin recitation appeared in Roblox. The avatars had an emcee.
The livestream was a funeral prayer. The congregation were avatars, sitting on a map in Roblox.
Aliff Nadzrin came across a TikTok livestream on Monday and posted screenshots to Threads. Don't laugh, he wrote. They were actually serious. They finished reciting Yasin, a chapter of the Qur'an often read for the dead, then there were prayers, and an emcee keeping the gathering in order.
Kosmo picked the post up on Tuesday. Gempak put the crowd at fewer than 500. Commenters said Roblox already has maps for religious events, nearer a video call than a match, except that everyone has an avatar. One person wrote that they had joined a solidarity gathering for Palestine in the same game.
Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali had died that Monday morning at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur. She was 100. Her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, confirmed it. By 6.20pm she had been buried at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya, with a state funeral.
She was married to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister. She was a doctor. In 1947 she enrolled at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore, the only Malay woman in the year. She graduated in June 1955 and went to Kedah to work in maternal and child health. In 1965 she became the first woman appointed as a medical officer in the Maternal and Child Health Department. She trained village midwives, and took immunisation into rural places where childhood disease still killed. She left government service in 1979.
In a 1997 speech she looked back on those years in Kedah. "By the time I left Kedah, it was with deep satisfaction that the people had chosen to accept the government's health programmes and had benefitted from them."
One comment under the Gempak piece put it without fuss. It might be different, the writer said, but it is not wrong. Let them do it according to their era.
