The Celebration of Bob Ross in the ASMR Community
[{"id":1,"type":"text","position":0,"block_data":{"block_content":"Bob Ross’ soft and relaxing presentation style has earned him quite an interesting niche audience in popular culture.\n\nHis soft voice, along with the soft scratches and brush strokes of his painting, has garnered him quite a large, posthumous audience in those that are interested in ASMR.\n\nASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, is, “a euphoric experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine”\n\nIt’s a bit like those tingles that you feel when you hear a really good bit of music, but a little different. ASMR is often triggered by specific sounds such as whispering, tapping or brush strokes. Not everyone can experience ASMR and everyone has their own individual triggers.\n\nFor a lot of people online, it seems that Bob Ross’ relaxing painting show is the perfect trigger for ASMR. I’ve also had people tell me that it’s so relaxing that they often put on an episode of The Joy of Painting to fall asleep!\n\nThis is quite touching when put in context along with one of the reasons why Ross decided to leave the military. He said he was;\n\n\"the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work\"\n\nAfter leaving the military, it was said that he never wanted to scream again. It’s both interesting and touching to see Ross’ work appreciated in an unconventional way that stays true to the friendly, open-minded nature of The Joy of Painting."}}]
